“Free Range” Yard

“Free Range” Yard

Ok, so the girls got their own yard yesterday. Today I am thankful I worked on this when I did, as I barely beat the storm that rolled through. So, we don’t have many chickens. This is good, because this meant I didn’t need to install a large yard for them. The space we created was 7×14, working out well with out 13 foot long coop. The only downside is that I didn’t adjust the yard for the leaner coop,…

Expanding

Expanding

I have been spending this quarantine looking at ways to upgrade or expand the space the girls have available to them. After much debate, deliberation and calculating, we believe we have found a solution that will meet the needs of our girls and the space and budget we have available. Keep in mind, there are plenty of options out there for adding a free range yard, run or extension to a coop. We looked at building an extension that was…

Routine Laying

Routine Laying

Our girls have finally settled into a routine and are laying 4 glorious eggs a day! That means all of our hens are laying now and they are all laying by 9am! This is a miracle! This also means we need to increase our egg consumption. Currently, we are running out of space to store our eggs. We do have a great system for it, somehow I though a rack that holds 24 eggs would be enough. I was wrong!…

Egg #3

Egg #3

I am happy to announce that we received our 3rd egg today. This was my cue to go ahead and fry them up. I am so excited that our girls are laying eggs and we are seeing progress. The two large eggs that we received were double yolks, but still delicious!

The Pet That Poops Breakfast

The Pet That Poops Breakfast

We are super excited this week! Our girls have grown up and given us their FIRST egg! I have not been out today to see if they have delivered anymore eggs to us. This egg comes just after giving our girls something new to do in their coop, FISHING! That’s right, we taught our girls to fish for minnows. They had an absolute great time and I am working on editing the video for posting. Please be on the look…

Upgrades!

Upgrades!

I worked hard to look at different watering styles for chickens. We currently have one that needs to be hung up to keep the water clean, but we don’t have a place to hang it in the coop. So I began the search for my girls and found some really awesome pieces that I put together to create our water setup. Now things that I wanted for my watering setup:Easy to FillEasy to InstallEasy to maintainSimple to AssembleReduces Water WasteKeeps…

Oh how big you are!

Oh how big you are!

They are growing extremely fast. I can’t wait, only 12 more weeks until they are ready to lay eggs! At a whopping 10 weeks old they are huge! Sadly I think we will be going into the colder time of year, so we may not get many eggs before then. I’ll have to figure out how I will be keeping them warm through the winter to encourage them to continue to lay eggs. However, they are so cute and love…

Expanding Their Limits

Expanding Their Limits

With much debate and research, I took the plunge and expanded the coop! While we tend to move the coop a lot, this expansion will aid in giving additional time before the coop needs moved. It will also give them some added space to run and new heights! I started with purchasing 14- 1in x 2in x 4ft lumber. We opted to make it a 4x4x4 cube. From the base cube, I added a cross bar and additional supports. This…

Temporary Expansion

Temporary Expansion

Outside relaxing in the shade next to the coop, surveying the ground around me and I realized. These chickens have devoured the ground! I have not yet decided on a wheel addition, so I needed to come up with something to give them some extra ground while I was outside. Enter – dog corral! The girls were more then happy to have the extra room to run and peck. Suddenly they were chasing each other, and I realized one of…

Feeder Upgrade

Feeder Upgrade

After a big rain I noticed the feeder had soggy food and the chickens were not too thrilled. So began the search for DIY feeders that could help prevent the issue, but also try to save some of the loss when they kick it around. Enter PVC Feeder! I am so happy to have found this! It took me less then an hour to assemble and everything I needed was easily acquired at Home Depot. They had the PVC pre-cut…
